1) May 8/9 Yard Sale in Georgetown from 9-5 on Saturday and 9-3. Volunteers are needed for setup and tear down on Friday and Monday as well. DONATIONS STILL needed. Call Becky at 303-567-0623, Debora at 303-550-2669 or Laurie at 303-567-2686. Or email: focp292@gmail.com

2) May 15 adoption at Petco in Golden. From 10-4. Currently attending: Angie, Mike and Maryann. Set up begins at 8:30, free coffee and danish. Volunteers needed to go along and take shelter animals!

3) Dogma adoption in El Rancho. From 10-2. Currently attending: Li-Anne and Laurie. Volunteers needed!!!

4) WestMuttster Dog Day Afternoon. Volunteers needed for Sunday from 8-5 and Monday for cleanup and tear down!!! Volunteers needed to "man" the FOCP booth.

5) Gilpin County Fair - August 21/22. Save the date!

Georgetown Christmas Market

Friends of Charlies Place is going to be roasting chestnuts and selling them at the Georgetown Christmas Market. We need volunteers to help us and/or to go to the shelter and bring dogs by to pose for adoption! The event is the first two weekends in December from 10-5 (Saturday and Sunday). We have a lot of fun and can potentially make a lot of money!!! We need help!

If you haven't heard, the yard sale was awesome. We made over $2000.00 for medical expenses for our critters! What a huge amount of work. Thanks to all of our volunteers!!!

CATS!!!!

We have a ton of cats at the shelter. Six more came into today, including a momma with brand new kittens. They are heartbreakingly cute, but -- boy -- we just have too many cats.

We have the following upcoming adoptions:

September 26 from 11-2 at Dogma in El Rancho. Please let me know if you can come and bring some kitties!!! Dogs are welcome too!!!

We have a huge list of potential events, including:

Annual Festival of the Bastardino, Englewood, Saturday, September 12 from 10am - 3pm
Rally to Rescue, Northglenn, Saturday, September 12 from 10am - 3pm
"Paws & Claws Runway Rescue", Saturday, September 12 at Aspen Grove in Littleton from 11am-3pm
Summerset Festival, Littleton, Sunday, September 20 from 10am - 5pm (huge event)
Festival at the West Arvada Dog Park, Sunday, September 27 from 10am - 4am
Zen Dog Adoptathon, Denver, any Saturday in September
October 3 at the Petco in Golden. Hours TBA.
Pet Expo, Denver, Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15

ALSO - we are trying to set up some local adopt-a-thons. Any ideas???

The Clear Creek High School Homecoming Parade is September 11 at 2:00. We have been asked to walk dogs in the parade. I'm planning on going. Carolyn and Cindy are also planning on going. Jen and Becky are going to try to make it as well. The more the merrier! Tell your friends!!! We are still working out the logistics.

We'd also like to find a couple of kids to hold our banner and walk in front of the dogs.

Hello FOCP Volunteers, Here is some updated information for you all:

****Most importantly is that the shelter has had very little traffic lately. We'd really like to organize adoption events and keep them going. Ideally, we'd love to promote YOU to Adoption Event Coordinator and have you research potential adoption events, organize them between the event and the shelter, snare some volunteers and dogs and/or cats and get some of them out of the shelter.

Currently, we have two pending: September 26 at Dogma from 11-2 and
October 3 at Petco in Golden

Please let us know if you want to help by holding a dog, transporting a cat or showing up to relieve some of the volunteers onsite!

*** Someday, I'll be able to never type the words "Tiger and Beula" again, except to tell you how well they are doing in their new homes. However, right now, sadly, they are STILL at the shelter and we are pushing again to find new options for them. I know we all want them to move on to "bigger and better" things and some day it will happen for them. Please continue to market them.

*** Are you good on Facebook? We have two Facebook pages out there and need to combine them into one...and make sure all the friends/fans are set up under one page.

*** Like to advertise? We need someone to take on monthly responsibilities of advertising for us. The ads are FREE and reach lots of people. Specifically, I'm talking about asking for volunteers, donations, advertising T&B, asking people to come to the shelter, etc. We can/should advertise each month in the Mtn. Neighbor, Colorado Serenity, Craigslist, YourHub, Canyon Courier, Clear Creek Courant, Mountain Ear, Facebook, KYGT, Weekly Register Call. We could have something in each one of those media each month, if someone has time to do it from home!

***Anyone want to check into organizing a Penny War this year? Amy Sue did it in the past and the kids at Carlson Elementary and made a pile of money and had a great time!

*** I have a spreadsheet FULL of potential projects. If you have a special interest, please let me know and I'll see if we have something to fit your interests. Also, if you have any ideas for new, worthwhile projects, please let me know and I'll add them.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE YARD SALE THIS WEEKEND, AUGUST 22/23 IN GEORGETOWN. LOTS OF GOOD ITEMS. STOP BY THE SHELTER, GRAB A DOG AND HELP THE LADIES AT THE YARD SALE!!!

Before you know it, it will be the holiday season again. I anticipate that our next BLOG update will include our plans for Christmas events, including roasting chestnuts, craft fairs and pix with Santa. !!!

We have been given the opportunity to have pet adoptions at DOGMA at El Rancho some Saturdays in August in September. The adoption event would run from 11-2. We need volunteers to pick up animals from the shelter, take them to DOGMA and return them to the shelter after the event. Please let Laurie know if you are available.! 303-907-7084.

Plato and Slim want foster homes.

Plato, a 5-6 year old Alaskan Malamute suffering from a terminal malignant melanoma is at our shelter. We are trying to find a foster home for him to spend his final days. Do you know anyone who might be interested in fostering him and giving some love for the rest of his days?

Slim, is a 10? year old sweetheart with irritable bowel syndrome which caused him to loose an amazing amount of weight. It was touch and go for a while for Slim, but due to the love and care he received from the shelter, he is making progress. He's coming along just fine and would love to get out of the shelter. He needs 3 meals/day and lots of potty breaks. Do you know anyone who could help Slim recover?

Volunteer Opportunities

Welcome to the "Help Wanted" BLOG for Friends of Charlie's Place!!! We have the following upcoming events and need lots of help:

1) Volunteer needed to pick up an animal and go on Petline 9 on July 15, 2009. Please contact Sue at the shelter for more info!

2) Fencing pickup. We have been given the opportunity to pick up 800' of chain link fencing from an Indian Hills location. The fence is in place and we need to take it all: fencing, posts, gates, etc. We currently are looking at the weekend of August 8th and 9th. Please let us know if you can help. We currently have two volunteers, a truck and trailer. We need more volunteers, as this is a big job.

3) We are planning on having a cat adoption at King Soopers on 7/16. Currently, we have two volunteers. If you are available to help, we can really use you.

4) Tommyknocker Days is set for July 18 from 9-5 and July 19 from 9-3. We will set up at Happy Tails in Idaho Springs. We have a silent auction and dog adoption planned. If you can help, we need volunteers to walk dogs up and down the streets and to get folks into Happy Tails to see our adoptable dogs. The more volunteers we get, the more dogs that get to go and get a chance to get adopted.

5) DOGMA in El Rancho has given us the opportunity to have a pet adoption at their location on a Saturday in August or September. It would be a lunchtime affair from 11-2 only. We need volunteers to go with critters and try to get them adopted! Do you have a spare Saturday?

6) The fall yard sale is scheduled for August 22 and 23rd. We need LOTS of volunteers to help with gathering donations, setting up the sale and selling at the event. We usually have a bake sale there as well. Please let Becky know if you can help (303-567-0623).

7) We would like to put together a calendar of shelter animals. Would someone like to work with our photographer and put this together?? We need to start this very quickly!!

8) We have been given the opportunity to work with "Complete Spectrum" on a fundraising event. This company puts on a financial planning seminar and, if we advertise the event for them, and try to get people to go to the event, they will give us $25 for each attendee. Is anyone interested in investigating this opportunity?

9) The annual Clear Creek County Non Profit Luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, July 30 from 11:30 to 1:30 at the Georgetown Community Center. Want a free lunch? It's a great networking opportunity for us and an opportunity to meet the other nonprofits in our county (and the lunch is good)!

10) Last, but not least.... we need a grant writer. If you just love to write grants, please let us know!!

Can you help Percy and Miss Mew?

Percy and Miss Mew are two senior kitties who were given up when their owner could no longer care for them. They are both sweet as can be and in good health. Percy is 18 and Miss Mew is 12. If you know anyone who can foster or adopt Percy and Miss Mew, please let Sue or Laurie know.

Volunteers needed to help plan "Cat-a-thon"

The shelter is receiving more cats that it can handle. We need desperately need volunteers to help plan a cat adoption event. It can be an event of our own, we can piggyback with another cat rescue organization, or tie into another event. If you have any other ideas on how to increase the shelter's cat adoptions, please let us know.
